The past comes back to haunt each of the characters in the sixth installment of the popular noir sci-fi adventure. In “Brain Scratch,” Faye is drawn into an eerie cult that promises electronic immortality and an end to worldly cares. Director Shinichiro Watanabe juxtaposes flashy television graphics with gritty, gray reality, as Ed hacks a path to the truth. Next, Faye and Ed confront different yet linked pasts in “Hard Luck Woman.” Ed (who turns out to be a girl) finds her long-lost father; Faye learns she can’t go back to the world she knew before a devastating accident. The two-part epsiode “Real Folk Blus” returns to the saga of Julia, the woman Spike once loved, who appeared in “Jupiter Jazz” (episodes 12 and 13). The icy Vicious’s attempt to take over the Red Dragon mob draws Spike and Julia into a deadly web of revenge.
“Real Folk Blus” marks the end of Cowboy Bebop, arguably the most stylish and sophisticated anime series in recent years. This last adventure will leave viewers with the same sense of loss they experienced when the first Star Wars trilogy ended. Although no further television episodes are planned, a feature is in the works. Fans can look forward to seeing their favorite Space Cowboy in the not-too-distant future.

When you add up all the best things about The Island, you might just conclude that there’s hope yet for Hollywood’s most critically reviled hit-maker, Michael Bay. Recruited by Steven Spielberg to direct this lavish and often breathtaking sci-fi action thriller, Bay rises to the occasion with an ambitious production that is, by his standards (and compared to Bay’s earlier hits like The Rock and Armageddon), surprisingly intelligent as it explores the repercussions of cloning in a sealed-off society where humans are cultivated for spare parts, surrogate parenthood, and full-body replacements for wealthy clientele. But when two of the clones (Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johanssen) begin to qustion their fate and the motives of their keepers, they escape into the real world and The Island becomes just another Michael Bay action extravaganza, albeit an impressively exciting one. With elaborate chase scenes and a high-tech feast of CGI to dazzle the eye, The Island recycles much of the plot from 1979’s Clonus while borrowing elements from Logan’s Run, Gattaca and Minority Report, and while it’s not as smartly conceived as those earlier films, there’s no denying that, in many ways, it’s Bay’s best film to date. –Jeff Shannon

You won’t need a bottle of rum to enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, especially if you’ve experienced the Disneyland theme-park ride that inspired it. There’s a galleon’s worth of fun in watching Johnny Depp’s androgynous performance as Captain Jack Sparrow, a roguish pirate who could pass for the illegitimate spawn of rockers Keith Richards and Chrissie Hynde. Depp gets all the good lines and steals the show, recruiting Orlando Bloom (a blacksmith and expert swordsman) and Keira Knightley (a lovely governor’s daughter) on an adventurous qust to recapture the notorious Black Pearl, a ghost ship commandeered by Jack’s nemesis Capt. Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), a mutineer desperate to reverse the curse that left him and his (literally) skeleton crew in a state of eternal, undead damnation. Director Gore Verbinski (The Ring) repeats the redundant mayhem that marred his debut film Mouse Hunt, but with the writers of Shrek he’s made Pirates into a special-effects thrill-ride that plays like a Halloween party on the open seas. Reed is TV commercial wunderkind Andrew Quint, a 32-year-old success who chucks his job and status symbol lifestyle for a career editing a prestigious but impoverished literary journal. Quint’s decadent, cigar-chomping boss Jonathan Lute (Orson Welles) speaks softly and carries a big checkbook, constantly reappearing like a little devil whispering temptations into his ear with a cynical air. “I’m going to get an honest job,” Quint tells Lute. “Silly boy. There’s no such thing.” The script fires wildly at a myriad of targets: public schools, private sellouts, consumerism, and hypocrisy. What makes this mod twist on the angry young man genre work is that Quint is neither angry, young, nor particularly sincere. Obsessed with the idea of freedom, he never really confronts his own, self-made prison. Carol White costars as his latest girlfriend, a big-eyed beauty with a Julie Christie smile; Marianne Faithfull and Lynn Ashley appear as his two mistresses; and Harry Andrews is memorable as a lascivious author. –Sean Axmaker

David Lean focused all his talent as an epic-maker on Boris Pasternak’s sweeping novel about a doctor-poet in revolutionary Russia. The results may sometimes veer toward soap opera, especially with the screen frequntly filled with adoring close-ups of Omar Sharif and Julie Christie, but Lean’s gift for cramming the screen with spectacle is not to be denied. The streets of Moscow, the snowy steppes of Russia, the house in the country taken over by ice; these are re-created with Lean’s unerring sense of grandness. The movie is so lush and so long that it becomes an irresistible wallow, even when logic suffers–like Gone with the Wind before it and Titanic after. Sharif, who achieved stardom in Lean’s previous film, Lawrence of Arabia, mostly looks noble, but the supporting cast is spiky: Rod Steiger as a fat-cat monster, Tom Courtenay as a self-righteous revolutionary, and Klaus Kinski and Alec Guinness in smaller roles. Geraldine Chaplin, in her adult debut, plays the doctor’s compliant wife. Robert Bolt’s screenplay won one of the film’s five Oscars, with another going to perhaps the most immediately recognizable element of the movie: Maurice Jarre’s romantic music, with its hugely popular “Lara’s Theme” weaving in and out of a swooning score. –Robert Horton

John Wayne stars as a 19th-century sea captain out for revenge against a wealthy shipping magnate in this interesting and unlikely 1948 offering from Republic Pictures. Wayne plays the wronged Captain Ralls with a convincing bitterness that foreshadows his later work in the John Ford classic The Searchers, and his grim portrayal of Ralls hits a high point when Ralls purposely wrecks his enemy’s prize treasure ship. The painfully beautiful Gail Russell costarred with Wayne only the year before in The Angel and the Badman and delivers a memorable performance as the tragic Angeliqu. Gig Young also stands out as a crewman who eventually learns the truth about Ralls. Wake of the Red Witch shares similarities in both character and climax to an earlier Wayne picture, C.B. DeMille’s Reap the Wild Wind, but this film has a more direct approach in exploring the complex motivations of its characters. –Mark Savary
